Quinta do Piloto Serra Mae
£17.50
Ruby red with garnet hues. Aromas of red cherry and woody herbs. Fresh acidity and balance through the palate, with a long lingering finish. Made from the oldest local Castelo vines, with an average age of 35 years, this red wine is fermented in concrete vats and then left to naturally settle with no fining nor filtration before bottling.
Ideal with red meats, game dishes, and cheese.
Enthusiastic believers in the unique qualities of Castelao, Raymond Reynolds and Felipe Cardoso (winemaker) collaborated to make this wine. Quinta do Piloto is a long-standing family estate in the Penisula de Setubal. Their estate property and winery in Palmela, including their rare, concrete autofermenters, is run by 3rd generation winemaker and owner, Filipe Cardoso. The majority of the estate's vineyards are located on the flat, sandy soils of the peninsula, to the East of Palmela. Here they have some fantastic (and some very old) Castelao. They also have some higher altitude sites, on north-facing, limestone soils, at the eastern end of the Sierra da Arrabida, surrounding Quinta do PIloto. Quinta do Piloto were one of the founding members of the Palmela Wine Company (formally known as SIVIPA), and although they are now venturing forward with their own estate wines.
