This wine revives an ancient Alsace tradition that wines assembled from noble grape varieties were called "Gentil". Gentil "Hugel" combines the smooth, and spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the fruitiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of Pinot Blanc and the thirst-quenching character of Sylvaner.
The Hugel family, settled in Riquewihr, Alsace, since 1639, is renowned for producing high-quality wines. The family estate spans 30 hectares, with more than half classified as Grand Cru vineyards, including Schoenenbourg (Riesling) and Sporen (Gewurztraminer). They also source grapes from 100 hectares farmed by partner growers. Hugel's wines are made exclusively from Alsace's noble grape varieties, with an average vine age of 35 years. The region's dry climate and "Indian Summer" allow for slow grape ripening, producing dry, well-balanced wines with great finesse. Hugel wines are known for their purity, with no added wood ageing or sweetening. The family has played a key role in shaping Alsace's wine laws, particularly regarding late-harvest wines and the revival of the "Gentil" blend, a traditional mix of noble Alsace grapes.
