Distilled at Dailuaine in 2008, this single malt Scotch whisky spent the following thirteen years aging in a single sherry butt releasing a bouquet of caramel, oak, and red fruits notes. In 2022, 816 bottles were produced.
The Hepburn’s Choice range comprises whiskies bottled either from specially selected single casks or from small batches of two to three casks. Always bottled at 46% alcohol, and naturally without artificial colouring or chill-filtration. Each bottling is chosen to showcase the specific characteristics of one of Scotland’s whisky producing regions, or those of a distillery in particular. This range is named in honour of Hunter Laing directors’ late maternal grandfather, William Hepburn, who travelled the globe with his job in the Diplomatic Service. With a fine judgement honed at many embassy functions, Mr Hepburn was a connoisseur of his homeland’s whiskies: with this in mind, these bottlings would indeed have been “Hepburn’s Choice”.
As the Laing family have been in the Scotch Whisky business for more than three generations, the company has acquired not only a great deal of experience but, just as importantly, vast stocks of some of the most sought-after whiskies in Scotland. The Estate works with some of the best cooperages in Scotland and the US, along with some of Spain’s most illustrious bodegas to acquire steady supplies of top-quality ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The casks are shipped to Scotland and then sent to the various distilleries to be filled with new-make spirit. Once filled, the Hunter Laing casks are left to age in the best conditions possible, either at the distilleries in question or at their warehouses in Glasgow. The cool, damp climate of the west of Scotland lends itself particularly well to the maturation of whisky. Our Master Blender regularly checks our stocks so that he is completely familiar with all of them as they mature and evolve. A large proportion of our output is blended whisky which involves nosing each Malt and Grain individually and sending casks in batches according to a particular recipe.
